  • Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) is offering as for today a relative old version PHP 5.3.3, if you want to have a better version, you’ll have to trust an unofficial APT repository. Here is How

    Thanks to the NGINX team, you can find nearly the latest version of PHP online at

    Create a new file php5-ppa.list

    vi /etc/apt/sources.list.d/php5-ppa.list

    and depending on the version of your ubuntu, you can replace the word maverick with the oldest oneiric, natty, or the latest lucid

    deb maverick main
    deb-src maverick main

    run an update, to get the latest PHP version

    # apt-get update
    # apt-get dist-upgrade

    Alternatively you can still compile PHP on your own..

  • MySQL is a multithreaded, multi-user, SQL (Structured Query Language) Database Management System (DBMS) with an estimated six million installations. MySQL AB makes MySQL available as open source software / free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL), but they also sell it under traditional commercial licensing arrangements for cases where the intended use is incompatible with use of the GPL. [Wikipedia]

    MySQl is powering a lot of open source application all over the world (for example my homepage with Joomla CMS, phpnuke, postnuke...), a lot of internet provider let you define at least 1 to 5 database.
    MySQL 5.0 is the most significant product upgrade in the company's ten-year history, and the list of new features is impressive and futhfill a lot of requirementsfrom small to middle complexity applications

    Wineis a project to allow a PC running a Unix-like operating system and the X Window System to run x86 programs for Microsoft Windows. Alternately, those wishing to port a Windows application to a Unix-like system can compile it against the Wine libraries. The name was derived from the recursive acronym "Wine Is Not an Emulator" (it implements a compatibility layer), although some have used the unofficial expansion "Windows Emulator". Although the forms "WINE" and "wine" of the name are sometimes used, the developers have agreed on the now correct "Wine". [Wikipedia]

    Note I have personally already tested following major tools (which I can not live without) under my SuSE box: XMLspy, Beyond compare, HP49 emulator without any pain using a daily build of WINE(beginn of 2005)

    This is release 0.9 ofWine, a free implementation of Windows on Unix. After 12 years of development, this release marks the beginning of the beta testing phase. Everybody is encouraged to try it; while there are still bugs, most applications are expected to at least install and do something useful. from release 0.9 anouncement

  • synology.cedric.datacenter

    I did win a Synology DS710+ & DX510 by filling out a survey, after having read an official tweet of Synology Inc.( about the contest 3 weeks ago. The funny part is that I bought a Synology DS1010+ (704CHF/692$) and 4TB of disk (280CHF/275$) at the same time…

    On the picture above, this is my current small datacenter :-)

    • DS 408 has four disks of  1TB in RAID5, so a volume of 2.7TB since 2008
    • DS1010+ has two disks of 2 TB in RAID1 so a volume of 1.8TB since 2008
    • I have others disks 3.5TB not represented in my custom NAS that will soon be retired…

    The DS 510 will perfectly complete my existing DS1010+, the DS710+ will be assigned to some other tasks. Synology is really developing high-performance, reliable, versatile, and environmentally-friendly Network Attached Storage products. I did never had any problems, and all software updates were working as expected. They are by far the best NAS on the market with a lot of software functionalities thanks to a Linux kernel.

    Synology DX510

    Expansion Unit for Increasing Capacity of the Synology DiskStation DS710+ or DS1010+. When the storage capacity of the Synology DS710+/DS1010+ is nearing its limits, it can easily be expanded by the Synology DX510. The Synology DX510 securely connects to the Synology DS710+/DS1010+ via an eSATA cable of specially-designed connectors on both ends to ensure maximum throughput. The Synology DX510 can directly expand the existing storage on the Synology DS710+ to a maximum 14 TB volume.

    Here are some I did add to the list of already activated one. Some were added for obvious reason like mysql, nginx and fail2ban to monitor SSH brute force attempt…

    cd /etc/munin/plugins/

    ln -s /usr/share/munin/plugins/nginx_status nginx_status

    ln -s /usr/share/munin/plugins/nginx_request nginx_request

    ln -s /usr/share/munin/plugins/mysql_ mysql

    ln -s /usr/share/munin/plugins/mysql_queries mysql_queries

    ln -s /usr/share/munin/plugins/fail2ban fail2ban

    Fail2Ban require root access to the socket of fail2ban, so edit munin-node

    vi /etc/munin/plugin-conf.d/munin-node

    And append at the end

    user root

    Restart Munin-node and force the munin-cron process to run the initial html reports or wait 5 minutes…

    /etc/init.d/munin-node restart
    sudo -u munin munin-cron

    Add to the crontab of the user Munin the command to run Munin every 5 minutes:

    sudo -u munin crontab –e
    */5 * * * * /usr/bin/munin-cron

    Protect the server host where Munin&160;will output its reports

    htpasswd -c /etc/nginx/.htpasswd username

    Now add a new site to nginx

    vi /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/waltercedric
    And put at least the following inside

    server {
    listen&160;&160;&160;&160;&160;&160; 80;
    root /var/cache/munin/www;
    location / {
    &160;&160;&160; expires off;
    &160;&160;&160; auth_basic "Munin";
    &160;&160;&160; auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;

    And reload nginx configuration with service nginx reload

    You can now point any browser to

    Citrix XenServer is a complete, managed server virtualization platform built on the powerful Xen hypervisor. Xen technology is widely acknowledged as the fastest and most secure virtualization software in the industry.

    In case you don’t have any optical drive attached to the server, this small how to will help you to install Xen Server as domain 0 (dom0) using USB flash drive.

    1. Download XEN server iso from
    2. Format your USB drive using FAT32,
    3. Use an older version of UNetbootin to create a bootable disk. Download, start and follow the instruction in user interface,
    4. Just plug the USB flash drive and boot on it to complete the installation of Xen Server.

    UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. You can either let UNetbootin download one of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your own Linux .iso file if you've already downloaded one or your preferred distribution isn't on the list (such as Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, FreeBSD, PartedMagic)

    I used the version 393 and it worked, the latest version (549),  seems to have a bug and refuse to boot with an error message

    Sony PS3 love linux...

    These instructions show you how to install LINUX on a Playstation 3 with the latest firmware.

    Downloading a Linux flavor

    Download one of these Linux versions:

    • Kubuntu - Ubuntu with KDE (recommended I can't stand GNOME desktop)
    • Ubuntu - The standard version using Gnome Desktop.
    • Xubuntu - Using the lightweight XFCE desktop environment

    how to []

    Burn the iso-file onto a CD/DVD depending on the size of the distribution

    Preparing the PS3

    In this step we will format the PlayStation 3 and create two partitions, one for the XMB (the PS3 operating system) and one for Linux. Before formatting the PS3, you MUST backup your games saved data.

    • In the XMB go to Settings > System Settings > Format Utility > Format Hard Disk. Choose Yes.
    • Choose Custom partition setting and Allot 10GB to the Other OS. Perform a Quick Format.
    • Reboot the PS3 by pressing X on your controller.

    Preparing to run the LiveCD

    • Insert the Linux CD/DVD you burned into your Playstation 3.
    • Go to Settings > System Settings > Install Other OS.
    • The system will detect a file called otheros.bld on your disk. Hit X to start the installer.
    • Go to Settings > System Settings > Default System. Set it to Other OS. Restart your PS3 by clicking X.
    • At the kboot: prompt, hit Enter. Linux will boot, slowly, from the CD.

    Once the system is up and running from the disc, you may choose to install Linux permanently.

    • Double click the install icon on the desktop.
    • Select Manual partitioning, and choose the 10.7GB drive.

    Back to normal operations under XMB

    To boot back to the XMB environment, type boot-game-os at the kboot: prompt.

    My Favorite Desktop under Linux has reach a huge milestone

    KDE 4.3.0 is out, and it is a great release. It is unlikely that any one specific thing will strike the user as the most noticeable improvement; rather, the overall user experience of KDE has improved greatly in KDE 4.3.0. The release's codename, Caizen, is a Japanese philosophy that focuses on continuous improvement throughout all aspects of life. That has been the goal of the KDE team for 4.3.0: polish, polish, polish. The statistics from the bug tracker speak for themselves: 10,000 bugs have been fixed. In addition, close to 63,000 changes were checked in by a little under 700 contributors. That is not to say that the KDE team did not add a large number of new features: 2000 feature requests were implemented in the past 6 months, meaning that any user's pet feature might well be among the improvements KDE 4.3.0 brings. May 25th, 2011. Today, KDE has released a first beta of the upcoming 4.7 release of the Plasma Desktop and Netbook workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Frameworks, which is planned for July 27, 2011. With API, dependency and feature freezes in place, the KDE team's focus is now on fixing bugs and further polishing new and old functionality.

    The 4.7 release will bring a number of exciting improvements:

    • KWin, Plasma's window manager now supports OpenGL-ES 2.0, improving performance and deployment on mobile devices
    • Dolphin, KDE's flexible file manager has seen user interface improvements and now sports a better user experience for searching in files' metadata.
    • KDM, KDE's login manager now interfaces with the Grub2 boot loader
    • Marble, the virtual globe now supports offline address search, especially making its mobile version more useful on the road

  • Knoppix 3.8 bittorrents are just hitting the web. Get you're copy here. This is the German CeBIT convention and expo. You'll need to use "lang=us" as a kernel boot option (at the grub prompt) for English. For German keyboards "=" isn't in the same place. It's typed with a Shift-0 on English keyboards. A good tool to download Torrent is Azureus

  • It seems that the latest sport these days is to hack a running device powered by a linux kernel. This time Linux reveal its power inside a Network Attached Storage (NAS). Originally powered by a Linksys firmware, it can be enhanced greatly by an open source alternative openSlug(beta but promising) or Unslug(stable)
    For openSlug:

       1. Number of drives attached to slug can be greater than 2.
       2. Bluetooth support can be added.
       3. More RAM can be supported.
       4. RunApex and use a different bootloader with cool features.
       5. OpenSlugNativeCompileEnvironment Compile natively on OpenSlug.

    Thanks people, I will surely aquire one NSLU2 very soon!

  • A new site has open last months, purpose is to unite the individuals interested in Linux and's purpose is to fill the biometrics void in the Open Source community.

    I hope that someone will write a driver for the Digital Persona or Microsoft fingerprint reader (which is the same device, one more true innovation from Microsoft Digital Persona)...Sometimes I hate being a Java specialist (and not a C++ developer) :-(
