Make your sony ericsson k750 mobile phone communicate with your PC under linux...

The difficulty is to find the right device the sony ericsson k750 has received from linux

1. Open a terminal console, ans as root (type # su then root password)
2. verify that udev (the automounting system) has recognized your phone. type
# lsusb
Bus 003 Device 006: ID 0d49:7100 Maxtor

Bus 002 Device 050: ID 045e:0025 Microsoft Corp. IntelliEye Mouse

For me the telephone has been recognized...

3. Lets find the device now, type
# dmesg
and search for the ericsson, If You find the device name, You are lucky. I must admit that I did not find it like this,
I brute force all possibilities :-) since I find on the official homepage of kmobiletools that it must be /ttyACM*

4. check permissions
most of the time only the root has access to ttyACM (must be the modem port), check
# ls -la /dev/ttyACM*
crw-------  1 root uucp 166, 0 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM0
crw-------  1 root uucp 166, 1 2005-09-10 23:19 /dev/ttyACM1
crw-------  1 root uucp 166, 2 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM2

5. change permissions temporarly (will be overwritten at reboot by udev and that's better because i am gonna give full access to all)
# chmod a+rw /dev/ttyACM

6. verification
# ls -la /dev/ttyACM*
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 0 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 1 2005-09-10 23:22 /dev/ttyACM1
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 2 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM2
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 3 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM3

7. start kmobiletools and go to the menu Settings / main settings

as "mobile phone": choose Ericsson generic
as "mobile phone device" enter one of these (brute force phase)
/dev/ttyACM0 or
/dev/ttyACM1 or
/dev/ttyACM2 or
/dev/ttyACM3
click after each choice, apply, if You did not receive an error message, then You have found the right modem tty

and it work!!! see screenshots below (click read more)


in order to set access rights on ttyACM1 "correctly" and  definitively, You must as root open the file
/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules
search for ttyACM, I found for my SuSE 9.3
KERNEL="ttyACM*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="660"
change to
KERNEL="ttyACM*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="666"

note 666 is unsecure, better would be to add user to the group, but i don't want to risk instabilities if I do not know how to do it: Any Linux master reading this text?

If you're shopping for a new CamCorder with HD (720p, 1080i) support, you should take a look at what Sony offer:

"The HDR-SR1 is one of the best examples of why this is an exciting time for camcorders. Within this single model, we see the major advance of an emerging media – hard disk drive – and the birth of a new video standard – AVCHD." Camcorderinfo.com has already 2 reviews: review1 and review2

and JVC with their new HD Everio GZ-HD7 (but not before april 2007).
All in all, the market is now offering more than 5 Camcorder: Panasonic NV-GS500, Sony (4 models) and JVC (2 Everio)

I've ordered 3 hours ago a Sony HDR-SR8 AVCHD 6MP 100GB High Definition Hard Disk Drive Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom. Since I ve already provided some links before, and here about viewing AVCHD and editing.
I can not wait any longer for camcorderinfo.com review, as I will be in hollidays in 18 days for my 7 weeks Australian trip. 

Why Did I choose the SR8?

• Size factor and hard disk, 100GB is luxus, I agree  60GB (SR7) would have done the job... 
• I have a PS3 so HD playback on a 4 meters screens is not an issue
• PC playback is also not an issue, even on moderated single core cpu, if you use the right codec (coreAVCHD or Elecard converter)
• Sony Vegas 8.0 is the best editor, I was able to cut and move part of video without efforts/reading a tutorial.
• The Sony docking station is great  for keeping cable  in place. (canon HG 10 has none)
•  QUALITY of fabrication, handling compared to Canon HG10
• Not reviewed yet by CamcorderInfo (even if camcorder is since 4 months available) but I suspect that It will blow th HG10, Ive seen a too many Canon Ads recently on CCinfo...hum

Some words about

Batteries:  NP-FH70 (134CHF) is in the same size as NP-FH60 (99CHF), but has a 1800mA capacity versus 1000mA of NP-FH60. They both are 33mm 'long'. But the NP-FH100 (190CHF) is 55mm long, with about 3980mA battery power.

Bandwidth: The Sony SR8 record at max 15 Mbps, AVCHD being able to go as far as 24Mbps, (no camcorder on the market is able to sustain that bandwidth). More bandwidth, means less compression. Less compression means fewer artifacts, less fast motion jumpiness and higher resolutions of video with less 'graininess'..

Determine K750 ROM version first determine which software version your Sony Ericsson k750i is running: Put in this sequence: >*<<*<*  and do not look at what the screen is displaying while typing, a hidden menu should appear. Then go to service info. from there choose software info The first version of the rom is R1A044 The latest (today) is L R1L002

Install the latest firmware Go to the support homepage of Ericsson (only with IE not firefox): Choose automatic mode Check the prerequisite (a list with checkboxes) Install the java application Connect he usb cable to the phone  Accept the licence and let the java applet connect to the phone and download the latest rom for You.  A popup windows: 1. Ask You to switch the phone off, and disconnect it from the usb, do it 2. While pressing the button "C" to connect it to the usb cable BUT Windows complains about the driver, even If you have install the full Ericsson suite download the driver here: (was not found on the genuine cd) - after installing the driver, the update should start an be completed in 12 minutes more or less... - I was the force to remove the battery because my phone was temporarly blocked, after the restart, the phone complete the installation and it's finish. - verify that You have the latest ROM version

I can't review camcorder, a lot of site are doing it in a professional way. Like always I propose You some links that You can use to gain a loooooot of time.

Video Playback

Attention:
you must deinterlace video to have the best experience! I use Elecard Converter Studio to view them (free for viewing, use De interlacing:option  best for speed),
You have to deinterlace because computer monitor are not interlaced!
1080i30(60 fields) or 720p60 or 1080p30 have the same raw data rate, while 1080p60 has twice more data!

I've tried

• Videolan: crash with AVCHD version 0.8.6c)
• Power dvd ultra  mixed quality output result, some freeze.
• Sony Vegas 8.0 Platinum edition with no success, image not great at all or with artifacts
• CoreAVC is the best software decoder out there, install it and any windows application must be able to play AVCHD or H264 (for $8)
