Linux

Linux ( or ) is a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux]

XBMC: maybe the best media center

XBMC is a cross-platform software available for Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows operating-system, as well as the original Xbox game-console. I am using it since 2003 on my XBOX

XBMC is currently available for Ubuntu Linux, Mac OS X (Intel-based Leopard and Tiger), Microsoft Windows, and the original (first-generation) Xbox. We are currently at Beta 1 for our upcoming release code named Atlantis. It should be noted that XBMC requires OpenGL 1.4 support, at a minimum, to function. We do however recommend OpenGL 2.0 to fully experience XBMC. Check your graphics drivers to see what version of OpenGL your GPU (graphics processing unit) supports.

OpenSUSE 11.1 ships December 18th, 2008 for both download and boxed editions!

My favorite Linux distribution is ready to be delivered in no less than 2 days...

I will share it with bittorrent 2 weeks long and will provide some first feedback on how it react on my 2 computer.

Sneak Peeks at openSUSE 11.1: Improved Installation, Easier Administration

Vista/Mac OSX has raised the bar in the area of good looking desktop, but openSUSE is now also able to fight back, just look at the screen  shots below for getting an insight in the new openSUSE 11.1:

Upon logging into your openSUSE desktop, you’ll be asked to send some hardware information to the Smolt Project. I like the idea of submitting real hardware profiles to developer so they can really concentrate on real hardware support requirement. In the same area, I would like to see a post mortem process crash agent like in XP/Vista so real statistics can be made and bugs corrected faster...

Android how to delete system application and remove unwanted MyTaxi on Galaxy S3

I use the hard way, free but a bit more difficult as it require a rooted device, I personally use “Android Terminal Emulator” with granted root permissions (after typing su a prompt will appear)

Android how to delete system application

su (enter)
mount -o rw,remount /system (enter)
rm -r /system/app/FILE-NAME-HERE.apk (enter)

How to remove this SHIT of myTaxi – Passenger Taxi App on Samsung Galaxy S3

This application got installed without my knowledge by a Samsung update as a System App that CANNOT BE UN INSTALLED!

First before I forgot: Go to hell Samsung and Intelligent Apps GmbH

If either of you continue in that direction, installing software without my prior permission, the next update to my Samsung Galaxy S3 will be CyanogenMod 10

Back to the removal of MyTaxi,  Samsung did hide taxi.android.client_v2.5.1.apk under the name /system/app/samsung_ch.apk

To remove it

su (enter)
mount -o rw,remount /system (enter)
rm -r /system/app/samsung_ch.apk (enter)

It's not a "must" update for users of previous versions, but it does have some nice perks. more

linux kmobiletools sync at glance

Make your sony ericsson k750 mobile phone communicate with your PC under linux...

The difficulty is to find the right device the sony ericsson k750 has received from linux

1. Open a terminal console, ans as root (type # su then root password)
2. verify that udev (the automounting system) has recognized your phone. type
# lsusb
Bus 003 Device 006: ID 0d49:7100 Maxtor
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 050: ID 045e:0025 Microsoft Corp. IntelliEye Mouse
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0fce:d016 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

For me the telephone has been recognized...

3. Lets find the device now, type
# dmesg
and search for the ericsson, If You find the device name, You are lucky. I must admit that I did not find it like this,
I brute force all possibilities :-) since I find on the official homepage of kmobiletools that it must be /ttyACM*

4. check permissions
most of the time only the root has access to ttyACM (must be the modem port), check
# ls -la /dev/ttyACM*
crw-------  1 root uucp 166, 0 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM0
crw-------  1 root uucp 166, 1 2005-09-10 23:19 /dev/ttyACM1
crw-------  1 root uucp 166, 2 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM2
crw-------  1 root uucp 166, 3 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM3

5. change permissions temporarly (will be overwritten at reboot by udev and that's better because i am gonna give full access to all)
# chmod a+rw /dev/ttyACM

6. verification
# ls -la /dev/ttyACM*
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 0 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 1 2005-09-10 23:22 /dev/ttyACM1
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 2 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM2
crw-rw-rw-  1 root uucp 166, 3 2005-03-19 20:36 /dev/ttyACM3

7. start kmobiletools and go to the menu Settings / main settings

as "mobile phone": choose Ericsson generic
as "mobile phone device" enter one of these (brute force phase)
/dev/ttyACM0 or
/dev/ttyACM1 or
/dev/ttyACM2 or
/dev/ttyACM3
click after each choice, apply, if You did not receive an error message, then You have found the right modem tty

and it work!!! see screenshots below (click read more)

in order to set access rights on ttyACM1 "correctly" and  definitively, You must as root open the file
/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules
search for ttyACM, I found for my SuSE 9.3
KERNEL="ttyACM*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="660"
change to
KERNEL="ttyACM*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="666"

note 666 is unsecure, better would be to add user to the group, but i don't want to risk instabilities if I do not know how to do it: Any Linux master reading this text?

Quick review of SuSE 10.0

Suse 10 linux I've done right now the migration to Suse linux 10 on 2 computer

Novell has killed the SUSE pro version and now offer:

  • A box version, for 59€
  • An Eval version (identical content as the box version but without printed manual or support) this one can be download using http, ftp mirror or better bittorent.
  • A 3rd version, which is open source only (understand without any commercial or closed source apps) can also be downloaded from www.opensuse.org

Note that all 3 versions above share the same source code base (open source kernel and extension developped at www.opensuse.org)

As usual, if You want to try for the first time a linux distribution, I recommend You to try the live DVD version (both 32 bits and 64 bits cpu version is available).

My experience with Update

  1. HP nx7000 has been migrated succesffuly from suse 9.3 to 10 without any pain (reboot ladtop with dvd inside and choose installation then update) Note that before updating I was forced to remove all major (and for me vital application): Videolan, mplayer, amule among others... The wireless and bluetooth card are working perfectly without any intervention (was not the case under 9.3 pro)
  2. My destop during update always hang after 54 minutes (during install of rpm mms (a winamp like) install) I was force to do a fresh install. I am convince it can not be a SUSE fault.

Quick review:
  • a lot more polished in KDE control center (thanks to KDE 3.4.2)
  • blazing fast during boot time, for sure 5 times faster with my setup (same hardware) - responsiveness desktop as ever, the NVIDIA driver installed after "online update" allow 3D acceleration right out the box
  • Superkaramba has been integrated into KDE, it has never been so easy to locate new themes (so call desktop widget), thanks to an integrated search engine, install or administrate them.
  • The "search box" in start menu is so great that I do not understand why microsoft has not done it before. this "search box" act like a search engine which allow You to queries the start menu with keywords. Example? searching a browser program by "internet", or "browser" highlight matching entries

A detailled review will follow soon....
