Why open source code for me will always be better...

Microsoft is still saying that proprietary code is far more secure than open source....a crazy point of view
  1. If we follow M$ assumption: exposed code is vulnerable...
  2. On the other side linux code has always been exposed...
  3. Windows code has always been safely locked away (true for end user or developer not affiliate with M$)
The only conclusion to the point above is that Linux contains more bugs/security problems than Windows.

But in real world, this conclusion is not realistic, since all webserver, and critical application are running under a UNIX system (Google Linux, and look at the crazy uptime of the 50 first server (average uptime of the first site is 1567 days. That's over four years!!!) running in the world on Netcraft: all are Linux based)

For me it has to do with the quality of the code.

Microsoft and Linux

Microsoft FUD by Steve Ballmer
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/execmail/
and response from Novell SUSE:
http://www.suse.com/us/company/press/press_releases/archive04/response.html
So lets summarize

  • Bill Gates has not see that a PC may need one day more than 640Kb...
  • M$ has not see the boom of internet and has waited till Netscape show them what to do... (browser)
  • M$ has not see the boom of internet search engine (Google), they start MSN search...
  • M$ has not see the boom of mobile mp3 player (Ipod & Itunes), they start MSN Music service...
  • M$ has not seen Linux Server and High Power Computing coming (HPC clusters), but M$ has now W2k 2003 with a media player and Internet explorer: an insecure browser running in kernel space!!!
  • M$ has not see managed code and JVM abstraction advantages (JAVA), they start .NET
  • M$ has not see that a PC may belong to a familly (real multiuser)
  • M$ has not see that an OS need a firewall installed as default, the have one in SP2 (2004, 10 years after windows95) but it can be switch off by the first worm....
Hum for the first company In world, I am asking myself what M$ is doing with their R&D budget? correcting a huge moutain of bugs or only buying nearly finished products from startup?
Lets face, M$ is the first company in world not because they merit it, simply they were at the right place at the right time.

Pathetic (FUD) Fear Uncertainty Doubt of Microsoft

Interesting, after 100 lines I stop reading this promotionnal articles, really good FUD (wikipedia):
Microsoft is hosting a discussion on Windows and Linux between its two top Linux consultants. Martin Taylor and Bill Hilf talk about the various OS

"We believe the way to integrate software, and the way to get software to work in a heterogeneous environment, is through promoting open standards"
a Funny response of a
slashdotter below.... so true and more to read here
Can somebody hit Bill with a clue-by-four and ask him about
1. Samba, and why the Samba project had to reverse-engineer everything?
2. Microsoft Office, and the hoops OpenOffice.org had to jump through to reverse-engineer their document storage format?
3. NTFS, and why Linux still can't support NTFS write natively (without using a MS DLL)?
4. All the hidden system calls that Microsoft uses internally, and which came up in the anti-trust case?

shame on You M$

Standard Linux was 36% lower overall TCO than Microsoft´s platforms and applications

Additionally, we made the following concessions to tip the scales in Microsoft's favour.
  1. We didn't modify the model to reflect research by the Robert Frances Group which shows that Linux needed 82% fewer staff-resources.
  2. We have not included the costs of malware; viruses, spyware, worms, keyloggers, adware etc. Every research point we have found suggests that this cost is essentially and predominantly a Windows platform cost, resulting in billions lost by business every year.
  3. We have also not included the substantial costs which arise when systems need to be pre-emptively rebooted or worse, crash, resulting in unscheduled downtime. All our research indicates that Linux rarely if ever suffers such problems and open source platforms on the whole are extremely robust.
  4. Finally, because Microsoft has claimed that introducing Linux into an environment will lead to increased reliance on external consultants, we have tripled the amount budgeted for such requirements on the Linux models. more HERE (PDF 2Mb)
