Painless OpenSuSE 11.1 to 11.2 update

My new OpenSuSE 11.2 with KDE 4.3.1 has never look so good!

While I was just force to reboot to load the new kernel (2.6.31) it is always a good idea to save your most important data before updating!

OpenSuSE 11.2 is not final but very close, update at your own risks. If you dont like taking risks, wait till 12th November 2009 for final release.

How to update to OpenSuSE 11.2 rc

Remove all existing YaST repositories pointing to OpenSuSE 11.1 by running as root

# zypper mr –-all -d

Then add all new repositories for OpenSuSE 11.2

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.2/ "openSUSE 11.2 Updates"
zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/ "openSUSE Factory Oss"
zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/non-oss/ "openSUSE Factory Non-Oss"
zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/debug/ "openSUSE Factory Debug"

Refresh all repositories metadata

# zypper refresh

Get the latest version of zypper

# zypper in zypper

Upgrade your whole operating system (distribution)

# zypper dup

Wait 2 to 3 hours, Zypper will download and update your system

when zypper is finished run

# SuSEconfig

Reboot to load the new kernel, and enjoy your new KDE

I have been following 11.2 for a while, upgrading through milestones and an RC from 11.1 very easily with zypper dup. But now it is time to install the Official 11.2 :-)

My Favorite Desktop under Linux has reach a huge milestone

KDE 4.3.0 is out, and it is a great release. It is unlikely that any one specific thing will strike the user as the most noticeable improvement; rather, the overall user experience of KDE has improved greatly in KDE 4.3.0. The release's codename, Caizen, is a Japanese philosophy that focuses on continuous improvement throughout all aspects of life. That has been the goal of the KDE team for 4.3.0: polish, polish, polish. The statistics from the bug tracker speak for themselves: 10,000 bugs have been fixed. In addition, close to 63,000 changes were checked in by a little under 700 contributors. That is not to say that the KDE team did not add a large number of new features: 2000 feature requests were implemented in the past 6 months, meaning that any user's pet feature might well be among the improvements KDE 4.3.0 brings.
